How do I clean the DosaMaker?

To avoid accidental burns unplug your DosaMaker and allow to cool completely before cleaning.

DO NOT immerse any part of the DosaMaker in water or other liquids.

DO NOT use steel wool, metal scouring pads, or abrasive cleaners on any part of the DosaMaker.

Use a sponge or cloth with warm water to wipe the cooking plates. If excess oil or food is stuck to the cooking plates use a small amount of dish soap with warm water and apply a bit more pressure when wiping the surfaces. For extremely stubborn food particles, you can use a nylon sponge or pad.

If crumbs or food particles have fallen into the Guide Post Slot, use the Guide Post Slot Cleaning Tool (which is part of the plastic spatula) to clean the Guide Post Slot.

If you have any questions, please email hello@DosaMaker.com.

When pouring batter on the cooking plate, the batter runs to one side of the plate. When this happens I cannot make an evenly spread dosa. What should I do?

If batter is running to one side of the cooking plate, or you feel your dosas are not evenly spread even though you are closing the lid correctly, check to make sure your DosaMaker is level.

First, unplug your DosaMaker and allow it to cool completely. Carefully hold the top and bottom of the DosaMaker and rotate it so the DosaMaker is upside down and resting on the lid. Now check to make sure all 4 rubber feet are pressed completely into their slots. All 4 rubber feet must be pressed in completely for the DosaMaker to be level.

If this does not solve the issue, make sure the surface you are placing your DosaMaker on (the countertop or tabletop) is level. If the surface is not level, move your DosaMaker to a surface that is level before cooking.

My dosa is thicker on one side and not evenly spread. What should I do?

First, make sure your DosaMaker is level. See the question above to learn how to make sure your DosaMaker is level.

If your DosaMaker is level, watch our instructional video to make sure you know how to close the lid correctly. It’s a simple motion, but generally takes a few times for someone to become comfortable with bringing the entire lid down at the same time. After viewing the video, we recommend practicing the closing motion without pouring any batter on the cooking plates to become familiar with the motion.

My dosa is not thin enough. How do I make a thinner dosa?

To make a thinner dosa you need to add water to your batter. When adding water to your batter you should add it gradually so it does not become too thin. Since the batter consistency can vary based on the recipe you are using we cannot tell you the exact amount of water you need to add, but our instructional video (click here to see the video) shows the batter consistency for a typical thick and thin traditional Indian dosa.

When making a traditional Indian dosa, the batter consistency for the DosaMaker will be a lot thinner than the batter used to make a dosa traditionally by hand.

When using your DosaMaker for the first time, we recommend trying different batter consistencies to determine the consistency that is best for the batter you are using. Once you find the consistency you enjoy, you can consistently make the same dosa on the DosaMaker.

My traditional Indian dosas have a different texture than a traditional hand made dosa. What can I do?

Here are a few cooking tips to adjust the texture of the dosa you are making:

1) Make sure the dosa batter consistency is thin enough before pouring:
If the dosa batter is too thick, the dosa will be thick and have a thicker, pancake-like texture. To create a thinner, airy dosa the batter should be thinner. To learn how to make the batter thinner, watch our instructional video by clicking here.

2) Add oil while the dosa is cooking:

The DosaMaker has been designed to make a crispy dosa with very little oil compared to a traditional handmade dosa. However, if you prefer to use more oil you can add oil while the dosa is cooking.

To add oil while the dosa is cooking you will open the lid during the cooking process. In most cases, you can open the lid between 1 minute 30 seconds and 2 minutes.

Note: If you open the lid too soon and the dosa has not had time to form and set, the dosa can tear apart as you are opening it.

After you open the lid, use a teaspoon to drizzle oil on the dosa. Continue cooking the dosa until it has reached your desired level of crispness.

3) Open the lid while the dosa is cooking and finish cooking in the elevated position:

After the dosa has formed and set you can open the lid and continuing cooking with the lid in the Elevated Cooking Position. In this position, the top of your dosa will not continue to cook as much and this will change the texture of your dosa. Remember to make sure you have allowed the dosa to form and set before opening the lid, or the dosa will tear apart as you are opening it.

4) Increase temperature setting and cook for a shorter time:

Cooking a dosa at a low temperature for a longer time can affect the texture of your dosa. Increasing the temperature of the DosaMaker and cooking the dosa for a shorter time can change the texture of your dosa.
